Fuel Facility Upgrade
Rapid growth at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) combined with an aging jet fuel system created a need for AUS Fuel to expand and upgrade its jet fuel receipt, storage and distribution systems.
Plans for airport expansion, including several new runways and taxiways, also created a need for the existing fuel facility to prepare for relocation.
In 2019, our team began design and construction of a two-phase program for the existing and future fuel facility. When completed in the summer of 2024, AUS will have a modern facility with more than two times its capacity and the capability to expand to meet demand beyond 2040.
The program required several unique solutions to address complex problems. A systematic construction phasing approach was implemented to maintain seamless continuous operation of the existing fuel facility and fuel supply to the airport. These included:
- Modification of a nearby highway to allow safe access to the site by fuel delivery trucks.
- Directional drilling of transfer lines under active runways and taxiways.
- Detailed design planning for a future hydrant pump pad and pipeline receipt facilities.
- Skid mounting fuel equipment for relocation to the new facility.

Phase 1: Completed without interruption to ongoing airport fuel operations.
