KC-46A Maintenance Hangar & Airfield Apron
We provided full design and construction support services for a new aircraft hangar and airfield apron to accommodate the KC-46A and other wide-body aircraft at Travis Air Force Base.
The 174,300-square-foot hangar has three bays and support space with general purpose shops. The hangar bays have 200 feet of clear span using long-span trusses with conventional structural steel wide-flange framing. The bays accommodate multiple wide-body aircraft, including the KC-46A, C-17 and KC-10. The support space includes the electrical and environmental (ELEN) shop, the hydraulic shop, administrative areas and a break room.
The 11,300-square-yard apron was developed in coordination with the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, Air Mobility Command and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To meet the standard loading criteria for the KC-46A program, a Modified Heavy Load Type C classification was used for the apron infill, hangar access apron pavements and interior hangar slab sections. The aircraft apron included 17-inch Portland cement concrete (PCC) on a 6-inch drainage layer with 8-inch cement-stabilized subbase on 12 inches of compacted select fill.
