LaGuardia Airport Terminal Improvements
Our team provided design and construction support services for a new consolidated Delta Air Lines terminal at LaGuardia Airport, replacing the existing C and D terminals.
The 37-gate, headhouse and four-concourse facility includes visitor check-in, baggage claim, security, and conferencing and administrative support spaces.
As the prime AE design consultant, we worked with Delta’s internal stakeholders as well as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), concession vendors, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) representatives to determine programming needs, adjacencies and critical functions.
Access roads, security measures and infrastructure upgrades also support the 1.3 million-square-foot facility. The existing site was significantly constrained, requiring expansion of power, water, sanitary and communications systems. A new substation was installed, and our team worked directly with all stakeholders to coordinate design and construction phasing and scheduling to maintain necessary operations and avoid delays. We worked closely with the airline and the PANYNJ to evaluate interim and proposed landside roadway changes for arrival and departure levels, curbside pick-up operations and taxi/for-hire vehicle staging areas to optimize traffic operations.

Green Building Goals
In addition to following PANYNJ and New York City building codes, the entire project achieved LEED Gold Certification. The certification process was achieved through a phased approach coordinated with the U.S. Green Building Council. Part of that initiative is an ice storage system to offset high daytime electrical costs.
The project has achieved over 6% energy savings modeled below the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 baseline. Energy conservation measures included improved lighting power density, envelope design, and efficient mechanical equipment. It also achieved over 45% water savings by using highly efficient water fixtures, which also helped tenants pursuing LEED or the Port Authority’s Sustainable Building Guideline (SBG) certification to claim high levels of water efficiency and points.
