Project
Plum Creek Water Purification Facility Advanced Treatment
We provided design and construction phase services for the addition of advanced treatment processes to the 6 million-gallon-per-day (MGD) Plum Creek Water Purification Facility in Castle Rock, Colorado. The community — taking a proactive approach to developing a sustainable, long-term water supply — set a target to meet its water demand with 75% renewable sources.
The town’s strategy to meet that goal included plans for both indirect and direct potable reuse sources from the community water reclamation facility. This project included addition of systems to provide greater removal of giardia, viruses and cryptosporium while also targeting reductions in contaminants of emerging concern.
We were the original designer of the Plum Creek facility, and the town engaged us to plan this addition of advanced treatment systems that will help the town meet its renewable source goals. Our team led the piloting, design and construction services efforts for the addition of pretreatment, ozone and biological filtration. We provided design services for the addition of raw water blending, biological filtration, advanced oxidation, ultraviolet (UV) treatment, granular activated carbon and residuals handling.

The granular activated carbon system includes eight adsorption vessels, each filled with 40,000 pounds of direct activated GAC. The system targets emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals/ personal care products, as well providing a polishing step for total organic carbon.
The addition was completed via the same guaranteed maximum price construction management delivery method that had been used for the design and construction of the original facility. For both projects, construction was divided into multiple work packages to expedite the schedule.
The facility is currently rated for 6 MGD but has been designed to expand to 12 MGD in the future.
